Facet Syndrome

Facet Joint Syndrome

Facet syndrome is an arthritis-like condition of the spine that can be a significant source of neck and back pain that can be caused by trauma, adverse posture overload, or other degenerative changes to the joints of the spine. The cartilage inside the spinal joints can break down and become inflamed, causing pain in nearby nerves, and referred pain in other locations of the body. At our pain management clinic in Houston,

Dr. Brett Warfield offers integrative treatments for facet syndrome at Texas Intergrative Pain Institute.

What Is Facet Joint Syndrome

Facet syndrome is an arthritis-like condition of the spine that can be a significant source of neck and back pain that can be caused by trauma, adverse posture overload, or other degenerative changes to the joints of the spine. The cartilage inside the spinal joints can break down and become inflamed, causing pain in nearby nerves, and referred pain in other locations of the body. Dr. Brett Warfield offers facet syndrome treatment to patients at our Houston, Sugar Land, and The Woodlands pain management clinic.

Facet joint syndrome occurs in both men and women but is most common for people between the ages of 40 and 70 and those who are prone to arthritis. It also may develop in people who’ve had a spine injury.

Each vertebra in your spine functions as a three-joint unit, composed of a large disc in the front and two facet joints in the back. This triangular design keeps the bones connected while allowing you the freedom to twist and bend. The facet joints are lined with cartilage, lubricated with synovial fluid, and protected by a covering that covers the entire joint.

Uneven pressure or weight on the facet joints causes them to wear quickly and become inflamed. Injury to these joints can also be caused by a car accident or slip and fall injury. They can also deteriorate during the normal aging process as attached muscles stiffen or spasm, creating acute and chronic back pain and restricting mobility. Degeneration of the facet joints can go undetected until back pain develops.

Facet Joint Pain Management- Houston

The majority of people with facet joint syndrome achieve symptom relief with medication, activity modification, and physical therapy.  Over-the-counter non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications can help reduce pain and swelling.  However, when back pain does not subside on its own or mobility problems begin, schedule an exam and consultation with Dr. Brett Warfield at our pain management clinic in Houston.

Patients who come to Texas Intergrative Pain Institute with neck and back pain are given a rapid diagnosis or review of their medical condition within a few days, not weeks. It’s a treatment process called Priority Consult. Dr. Warfield relies on the latest technology to pinpoint your diagnosis, including a physical examination, x-ray imaging, Cat Scan, and MRI scanning. After confirming your condition, we can propose a customized treatment plan to improve functionality and mobility and eliminate your back pain.

Our patient’s treatment plans are centered around non-invasive and regenerative methods that avoid painful surgery or other invasive therapies. Your customized treatment plan for facet syndrome may include:

  • Facet joint injections
  • PRP Therapy
  • prescription pain or muscle relaxant medication.
  • Intergrative pain management

You may be referred to physical therapy to learn the correct postures to use while standing, walking, and performing activities.  You may learn new ways of performing activities, such as lifting, to reduce the amount of stress on your back. Exercise can help increase strength and flexibility.

By providing your body with the natural healing elements it needs in larger quantities, we can speed up the healing process while slowing down the progression of deterioration and relieving back pain. Reduced pain and inflammation will result in greater mobility and a better quality of life. Our pain management clinic in Houston believes non-invasive therapies should always be utilized before considering more invasive procedures, such as surgery.
